A Step Too far? is the 3000 mile charity walk I will be embarking on in May 2011 with the aim of raising £100,000 for Tag Rugby Trust. I will start in New york and end in Los Angeles three months later, and will be following as much of Historic Route 66 as I can. The route covers just over 3000 miles and will take me approximately 94 days of walking.

The inspiration for the walk and the choice of charity it will support goes back to 2007 when I was playing for Glasgow University Rugby Club (GURFC). We were trying to find innovative ways of raising money for the Rugby Club. One of the idea’s I came up with was to walk for 24 hours on a treadmill which meant it was far more about the mental strain rather than the athletic pressure.

When Mark Beaumont, a friend from Glasgow, completed his record breaking round the world cycle race, I saw how much a challenge like that can change your life and also inspire others. Then the classic tale begins of me discussing with friends that I was considering undertaking what seemed a ridiculous challenge – to walk across America. A couple of months later I overhear a question put to my sister “is he actually going to do it?” and she very quickly answered “he has to…he has told too many people about it now.”

So from idea to action – Since early January 2011 I have been training and organising A Step Too far? This has included nominating the charity which would benefit from the funds that I raise.

I have chosen Tag Rugby Trust simply because I believe in their principles. Their motto is ‘Building Futures Through Rugby’. I believe that any sport will bring people together and develop thier personality. I selected a rugby based charity as I just have first hand experience of this. It certainly changed my life, from both playing and coaching. Some of the people I have met and places it has taken me have been amazing. Through coaching I have seen people change and seen their lives change around them. Please read more about it on the Charity Page.

My main resolution for 2011 has been that I will walk anywhere and everywhere I can. After numerous discussions with fitness experts my training has to be based around walking not running, as running will train the wrong muscles. This being said I will be joining my close friend, George Johnson, in training for the London Marathon to put work on both my athletic and my mental stamina. I am starting my training by walking to and from work every day (12 miles in total) this only a small portion of the total daily mileage (40 Miles) I will be going through everyday on the actual walk.

I will keep this website up to date with all my progress throughout my training as I work towards the start date. As soon as I start the walk then there will be daily updates on the site for you to keep totally informed about what is going on.
