Day 64 – King Of The Road

When I woke up this morning it was raining. Not good for me but great for all the fires surrounding Santa Fe. By the time I had been dropped at my starting marker the sky had cleared and it was set to be a glorious day in Santa Fe.

Leaving Santa Fe

Like I have said before I like leaving cities on a Sunday. It is very calm, there are less cars on the road and it just feels nice to be up when you know most people are still sleeping. I did have an empty feeling along with a really energy. The empty feeling was leaving Santa Fe where I have been to so many times, and the energy came from knowing I am on my final sprint to LA. It is strange that I look back to when I was back in Ohio in the rain and now I am so much closer to the finish line. Still, i don’t want to get ahead of myself, I still have some pretty rough terrain and weather to go through before I that pier.

King Of The Road

I have been waiting for this blog name for quite a while, in fact since my dad took a picture of a sign that said it. But today it became aparent. As I climbed the hills out of Santa Fe, Shaun pointed out to me that we were still on route 66. This road was 3-4 inches deep in sand. I could not believe him. He showed me signs I had passed only half a mile before and sure enough he had photographic evidence of the signs. So I guess I feel like a king of Route 66 because I am walking where the tourists can’t get their Harley Davidson bikes and their Ford Mustangs. These roads are only suitable to hikers and all terrain vehicles. It feels great to walk even the most remote parts of this historic route.

Graham

Ok so I have been a little smug about not getting any major sunburn, but I must introduce the newest bit of my kit. I have called him graham due to him being a green hand sock, trust me I have way too much time on my hands!! Anyway he is a sock that covers the strangest sunburn I have on my left hand. Yes i do turn him into a puppet when I get bored and talk to him a little like Wilson from ‘Cast Away’ But he protects me from getting sun burn at 7000 feet and that is all I am majorly concerned about. Being out in the sun for 12-13 hours is tough, but it would be harder if I had sunburn.

I don’t ever believe people when they say that talking to yourself (or a green hand puppet for that matter) is the first sign of madness!!! Brilliant Jonny, I can just imagine you doing that with all your crazy voices and facial expressions. I cannot wait to see you soon and have an absolute giggle. xxxxx

Yea – You have to watch out for that as you are 7,000 feet up in the SantaFe area with thin air and high burning in the sun.  Be careful – just keep hosing yourself down at every garage!!!  (With water NOT Petrol!!)  xx

Way to much time on your hands. But I like the name, keep putting that factor 50. And can you bring your puppet home and give us a demo with all the facial expression!!
